Barriere’s Culture of Care programs are designed to support our 430 employees in pursuing their personal and our collective wellbeing. The Internship Program is one way we accomplish our goal to attract and develop top talent then hire from within through promotions. It is typical for people to participate in the Program for multiple years and/or become employees once their Program is over!
INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Now in its 25th year, Barriere’s Internship Program promotes our best practice standards and Culture of Care by providing participants an enriching and enjoyable total immersion into the company over the course of a summer. We were uninterrupted in 2020 with a class of 15 Interns from six universities, and last year’s class was a diverse group of 17 people from nine universities.
Barriere Interns gain valuable construction experience and must be college sophomores, juniors or seniors pursuing Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Industrial Technology, Occupational Safety and Health, or related majors. They are each assigned a manager whose industry-leading expertise matches their goals, and they work on a project that will make real improvements to Barriere.
In addition to working on their projects and presentations all summer, Barriere Interns:
- Prepare for a successful summer during a two-day orientation at our dedicated Training Center, including CAT equipment training
- Tour all three of our asphalt plants
- Spend a day on site with leadership of each of our four operating groups
- Extend Barriere’s Culture of Care through a group community service project
- Present their projects to management on the final day
