Barriere is honored to earn a National Safety Excellence Award from Associated Builders and
Contractors (ABC) once again. The award was presented at the 34th annual Excellence in Construction®
Awards during ABC Convention 2024 in Orlando, Florida, on March 14. Barriere Safety Manager Lynn
Meades and Asphalt Operations Manager Ricky Quigley accepted the award on the company’s behalf.
The National Safety Excellence Award (NSEA) winners were selected from ABC member firms that
achieved Diamond, Platinum or Gold status in 2023 for ABC’s Safety Training Evaluation Process (STEP)
Safety Management System. Barriere was one of only 45 companies recognized with a National Safety
Excellence Award for 2023, and this marks the 11th consecutive year the company has achieved
Diamond status, the highest STEP level possible.
The NSEA award is presented to companies that exhibit a continued commitment to jobsite safety and
whose safety performance and programs are judged to be exemplary by the ABC National Health and
Safety Committee. Awards are based on data submitted via the ABC STEP Safety Management System,
essay questions and video interviews with company presidents/CEOs/principals about their corporate
safety culture. Award categories are based on a company’s total work hours per calendar year and its
placement within the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS codes).
Founded more than three decades ago, the STEP Safety Management System has become the standard
for developing world-class safety management systems in construction. It is designed to help both large
and small contractors evaluate every aspect of their corporate safety and health programs and identify
opportunities for improvement.

The National Safety Excellence Awards are presented in three major code categories of the North
American Industry Classification System: NAICS 236—Construction of Buildings; NAICS 237—Heavy and
Civil Engineering Construction; and NAICS 238—Specialty Trade Contractors.
Barriere will be among the NSEA winners recognized in the May 2024 issue of Construction Executive
Magazine.
