Training and Development

We Strike
The right balance

Operating as one cooperative team while maintaining our entrepreneurial spirit.

Commitment to Continuous Improvement

In line with Barriere Construction’s zero-incidents philosophy, our comprehensive continuing education and training programs focus on safety. What follows is a brief review of some of the efforts we make to develop our team and to maintain a culture of safety and excellence.

Barriere’s Comprehensive
Training and Development Programs

As we expand our workforce and geographic reach, it is critical to share our positive safety culture through our New Employee Mentor Program. Designated mentors take a personal interest in seeing that each new team member develops the skills and knowledge needed to succeed at Barriere. Partnering a mentor in the field with each new hire strengthens our safety culture and reduces the incidence of safety mishaps due to inexperience.

Barriere promotes continuing education on hazard mitigation through daily task analysis reviews, weekly toolbox talks, and quarterly lunch-and-learn sessions for all crews. All hourly employees are encouraged to identify–and are often rewarded for identifying–job-site hazards that, unattended to, could result in serious injury or fatality.

Barriere’s Craftsman Training program curriculum includes safety training, technical instruction, and management topics. The five-month program – administered online, on the job, and through classroom training – is designed to meet Barriere’s on-the-job training core competencies. The program is part of our ongoing efforts to design dedicated career paths to help our workforce move up the ranks. This dedicated training program ensures that our employees have the experience, education, and development opportunities necessary to succeed.

Participants are nominated by their direct supervisors and chosen by their group’s general superintendent to participate in the company-wide program.

To develop skilled operators, our Operator Training Program provides several layers of training in safe equipment operations, helping employees to move from one classification of operator to the next.

The National Safety Council has awarded Barriere’s on-road drivers with the NSC South Louisiana Chapter Award of Honor for its 2016 Fleet Safety Award Contest. Our drivers were recognized as best in class, earning this distinction in virtue of a calculated frequency rate based on total miles driven, vehicles in service, and reportable accidents.

We invest in our team by providing the skills and knowledge to enable them to safely deliver superior construction solutions for our clients and embody the Barriere way. Participants will complete online modules, perform on-the-job tasks, and in-classroom training, all designed to meet the eight Barriere on-the-job training core competencies.

Trainees will also learn about responsibilities at the craftsman, operator and leadership levels, and will explore career path options available for asphalt field employees. Training sessions will focus on administration, communication, crew management, leadership, operations, trenching, and working in confined spaces, in addition to OSHA 10, traffic control systems, and rigging.

ANNUAL SAFETY/TOTAL PROCESS RELIABILITY TRAINING WEEK

Barriere’s Annual Training Week is held in the first quarter of the year, when we shut down all operations for one week to ensure that all employees across the company have an opportunity to receive training. During the week, we bring all employees together to be trained in safety, total process reliability, and equipment repairs. This event is a rewarding opportunity to renew employee engagement by focusing on subjects that affect every aspect of our business.
