We removed 3.5 inches of existing roadway and replaced it with 2-inch asphalt binder course and 1.5-inch stone matrix asphalt (SMA). To accomplish this, we milled 3.5 inches of existing asphalt out in one lane and replaced it with 2 inches of binder course during the same shift of work. This allowed us to minimize road surface unevenness, leaving a mere 1.5-inch joint after each shift of work. Essentially, we eliminated or reduced safety concerns for the public.
