TRAINING AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT
We strike the right balance — operating as one cooperative team while maintaining our entrepreneurial spirit.
Commitment to Continuous Improvement
In line with Barriere Construction’s zero-incidents philosophy, our comprehensive continuing education and training programs focus on safety. That’s why the Barriere team completes over 16,800 hours of training each year. What follows is a brief review of some of the efforts we make to develop our team and to maintain a culture of safety and excellence.
At Barriere, safety is a responsibility that must be shared but that cannot be delegated. By allowing us to self-insure for all but catastrophic claims, this comprehensive stress on safety also gives us a competitive advantage. Lower insurance rates enable us to underbid our competitors.
Helping Our Leaders Grow
We help our employees get from “good” to “great” through our unique blend of training programs, programs that all employees participate in throughout their careers with us.
Hands-On Mentorship
Barriere promotes continuing education on hazard mitigation through daily task analysis reviews, weekly toolbox talks, and quarterly lunch-and-learn sessions for all crews. All hourly employees are encouraged to identify–and are often rewarded for identifying–job-site hazards that, unattended to, could result in serious injury or fatality.
Craft Training
Our Craft Training program has earned the Greater Baton Rouge Industrial Alliance (GBRIA) Merit Award for Craft Workforce Development.
Equipment Operator Progression Program
The National Safety Council has awarded Barriere’s on-road drivers with the NSC South Louisiana Chapter Award of Honor for its 2016 Fleet Safety Award Contest. Our drivers were recognized as best in class, earning this distinction in virtue of a calculated frequency rate based on total miles driven, vehicles in service, and reportable accidents.
Leadership Development Program
Our Leadership Development Program enhances leadership and management skills, strategic decision-making, and the building of partnerships. Training opportunities include:
- Annual ethics and compliance
- First Aid/CPR
- Defensive Driving
- OSHA 10
- Specialized training in hiring, selection, and performance management
- Specialized training for all levels of leadership to help improve their skills
Annual Training Week
Barriere’s Annual Training Week is held in the first quarter of the year, when we shut down all operations for one week to ensure that all employees across the company have an opportunity to receive training. During the week, we bring all employees together to be trained in safety, total process reliability, and equipment repairs. This event is a rewarding opportunity to renew employee engagement by focusing on subjects that affect every aspect of our business.
