TRAINING AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

We strike the right balance — operating as one cooperative team while maintaining our entrepreneurial spirit.

Commitment to Continuous Improvement

In line with Barriere Construction’s zero-incidents philosophy, our comprehensive continuing education and training programs focus on safety. That’s why the Barriere team completes over 16,800 hours of training each year. What follows is a brief review of some of the efforts we make to develop our team and to maintain a culture of safety and excellence.

At Barriere, safety is a responsibility that must be shared but that cannot be delegated. By allowing us to self-insure for all but catastrophic claims, this comprehensive stress on safety also gives us a competitive advantage. Lower insurance rates enable us to underbid our competitors.

Helping Our Leaders Grow

We help our employees get from “good” to “great” through our unique blend of training programs, programs that all employees participate in throughout their careers with us.

Hands-On Mentorship
As we expand our workforce and geographic reach, it is critical to share our positive safety culture through our New Employee Mentor Program. Designated mentors take a personal interest in seeing that each new team member develops the skills and knowledge needed to succeed at Barriere. Partnering a mentor in the field with each new hire strengthens our safety culture and reduces the incidence of safety mishaps due to inexperience.

Barriere promotes continuing education on hazard mitigation through daily task analysis reviews, weekly toolbox talks, and quarterly lunch-and-learn sessions for all crews. All hourly employees are encouraged to identify–and are often rewarded for identifying–job-site hazards that, unattended to, could result in serious injury or fatality.

Craft Training
Barriere’s Craft Training program includes a Core Training curriculum provided by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), a nonprofit known for its standardized training and credentialing program for the construction industry. The Craft Training includes courses in Basic Safety, Construction Math, Tools, Rigging, Communication Skills, and Introduction to Construction Drawings. By completing this curriculum, trainees obtain the knowledge and skills they need to continue their education in any craft they choose.

Our Craft Training program has earned the Greater Baton Rouge Industrial Alliance (GBRIA) Merit Award for Craft Workforce Development.

Equipment Operator Progression Program
To develop skilled operators, our Equipment Operator Progression Program (EOPP) provides several layers of training in safe equipment operations, helping employees to move from one classification of operator to the next.

The National Safety Council has awarded Barriere’s on-road drivers with the NSC South Louisiana Chapter Award of Honor for its 2016 Fleet Safety Award Contest. Our drivers were recognized as best in class, earning this distinction in virtue of a calculated frequency rate based on total miles driven, vehicles in service, and reportable accidents.

Leadership Development Program
We ask all of our leaders to participate in various training opportunities to help them support field operations. Every year, Barriere supervisors receive an average of 20 hours of leadership and safety training.

Our Leadership Development Program enhances leadership and management skills, strategic decision-making, and the building of partnerships. Training opportunities include:

  • Annual ethics and compliance
  • First Aid/CPR
  • Defensive Driving
  • OSHA 10
  • Specialized training in hiring, selection, and performance management
  • Specialized training for all levels of leadership to help improve their skills

“We know we are nothing without our employees. To this end, we strive to keep employees until they retire by helping them build careers in construction.”

Peter Wilson CEO October 2, 2019

Annual Training Week

Barriere’s Annual Training Week is held in the first quarter of the year, when we shut down all operations for one week to ensure that all employees across the company have an opportunity to receive training. During the week, we bring all employees together to be trained in safety, total process reliability, and equipment repairs. This event is a rewarding opportunity to renew employee engagement by focusing on subjects that affect every aspect of our business.
