Barriere’s success is dependent upon the success of our people. We are continually finding new ways to invest in our team and provide them with the tools to nurture their talents and help them to advance in their careers. To this end, Barriere recently held our inaugural Leadman Training Program – an intensive 45-hour, 6-month course. This was the first of its kind for our company.
As part of the program, participants completed online modules, performed on-the-job tasks, and participated in classroom training, all designed to develop Leadman competencies.
Online program topics included Barriere’s “The Six” to reduce significant injuries and fatalities, company-wide safety policies and the importance of customer safety rules. Participants also learned about career path options available for asphalt field employees, as well as responsibilities at the Craftsman, Operator and Leadership levels.
The classroom training delved deeper into “The Six” and explored an array of general safety topics, effective communication techniques, Barriere’s new employee mentor program, emergency procedures and our Stop Work Program, among other themes.

In addition, we are excited to announce that upon completion of the program, our Barriere Construction Group Leadman, Lance Montross, has been promoted to Foreman!
Stay tuned for details on our next Leadman Training Program session. Program participants, nominated by their direct supervisors, are reliable, safety-minded team players who demonstrate strong leadership skills. The General Superintendent of each Group reviews their Group’s nomination forms, and three to four employees per Group are selected to participate in the program.
