HISTORY OF FAMILY
Barriere Construction is a fourth-generation, family owned company headquartered in Metairie, LA. The business got its start when Gaines Wilson purchased a Kentucky road construction company, growing it to include 15 paving and aggregate companies and four hot mix asphalt plants throughout the southeast.
The company relocated to New Orleans in the 1950s, and after Gaines’ retirement his son George H. Wilson, Sr. managed the company until his death in 1977. With George’s three young sons not yet ready to take the reins, his wife Betty Wilson was named Chairman and Chief Executive. With a compassionate commitment to integrity, ethical business practices, and providing a safe work environment, the company prospered under her respected leadership. Under Betty’s leadership is where Barriere’s culture of care was formed, and we are proud that it still lives on today.
Gaines Wilson takes over R.B. Tyler Company in Louisville, KY in 1949.
Today, Betty Wilson still plays an important role as family matriarch, though company is managed by her sons George Jr., who serves as Chairman of the Board, Peter, President and CEO; and Bert, who serves as President of Asphalt and Materials Operations.
Barriere’s commitment to its employees and the communities where we live and work mean that multiple generations of employees are commonplace on the Barriere team, including members of the fourth generation of the Wilson family. Taking up roles in operations, business development, and communications, they strive to continue the tradition of safety, quality and service started decades ago.
That’s not the only tradition, however. Each year Barriere holds a company picnic to thank our employees and their families for their continued commitment to excellence. The 2016 picnic welcomed over 1,400 friends and family to the Audubon Zoo for some family fun. Thank you to everyone for making this year’s 27th Annual Company Picnic a success!
